The Luxury Collection Moves Beyond the Hotel Room

Author: Ritu Upadhyay Release time: 2026-09-05 02:46:55 View number: 2

On the Aegean Odyssey, the way between islands is a helicopter. Nine days, Mykonos to Paros to Santorini, with a yacht for the water the aircraft does not cover. How a guest moves between hotels is not a logistical footnote on this trip. It is a large part of what The Luxury Collection is now selling.

The Marriott International brand, which is often considered the most “boutique,” unveils Expeditions this month, a slate of guided journeys that carries the hotel operator past the room and into the itinerary. The Aegean route is one of 12 unique experiences around the world that guests can choose from. The push arrives alongside the brand’s newest hotel. Amoh, its first property on the island of Rhodes, is a built-from-ground-up resort on an island that has spent 2,000 years absorbing other people’s architecture, from Hellenistic builders and Roman quarrymen to the Knights of St. John. Where The Luxury Collection built its reputation on palaces and grand buildings that were extraordinary long before any flag went up, here it had to be created from scratch.

The collection’s lineage runs back to an Italian hotel company founded in 1906 that assembled some of Europe’s grandest addresses. It came to Marriott in the 2016 Starwood acquisition, and now spans more than 130 properties in over 40 countries, from the Gritti Palace in Venice to Al Maha in the Dubai desert.

“The Luxury Collection has never been solely about heritage buildings, but it has always been about extraordinary destinations and the unique stories they have to tell,” said Bruce Rohr, vice president and global brand leader for The Luxury Collection.

Unlike most Marriott brands including The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and JW Marriott, The Luxury Collection hotels keep their own names and character and become part of the group because they are unlike one another. They are curated rather than built to a template.

“The criteria,” he explained, is the same across all. “Distinction, authenticity, and destination relevance.”

Twelve Journeys, Four Formats

The Luxury Collection Expeditions extends that claim past the front door. The guided trips are built around the brand’s hotels, which supply the anchors and the accommodation. Expeditions run across destinations in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, revealing the cultural heritage, craftsmanship, cuisine, ecosystems, and wellness practices of destinations worldwide. The brand supplies the routing, transport between stops and the expert guides, from archaeologists and chefs to artisans and conservationists. Itineraries are unhurried, group sizes small. Some run an afternoon, others cross three islands in nine days.

Rohr rejected the tour operator framing. “Expeditions is not about becoming a tour operator, but more about extending our role as a destination authority beyond the walls of any single hotel,” he said.

It is also an answer to what holds 130 hotels together when none of them look alike. “We curate distinctive hotels, not prototypes,” Rohr said, adding that what unites them “is not a shared design aesthetic or a prescribed service ritual, but rather a promise that every hotel is deeply connected to its destination.” The brand-wide threads are programmatic, including Destination Discovery experiences and a daily Epicurean Moment built on local food and drink.

The company uses the tagline “The Destination Authority” across its portfolio of Luxury Collection hotels, though Rohr was candid that the expertise sits with hotels that are locally staffed and run. “We don’t create the destination expertise, we identify it, celebrate it, and connect guests to it,” he said.

The Race Past the Room

The move tracks a broader shift at the top of the market, where luxury is defined less by what can be added to a stay than by the quality of the access behind it. Belmond sells rail journeys, Aman and Four Seasons run private jet programs, and The Ritz-Carlton operates yachts. The Luxury Collection’s version is asset-light, built on hotels and partners it already has.

Marriott’s luxury group has framed 2026 around experience over acquisition, citing research that 88 percent of high-net-worth travelers define status through knowledge and respect rather than possessions. “Rather than collecting things, they’re collecting stories and meaningful memories,” Rohr said.

Asked where the collection lands in five years, he pointed past the real estate.

“In five years, I believe The Luxury Collection will be recognized not just for where its hotels are located, but for the depth of discovery they make possible,” he said.
